Students will be immersed in the study of Spanish language and Latin American culture, improving their language skills and developing an appreciation for the people, culture and history of Costa Rica. Students who have completed SPAN 1402 or take the Spanish Placement Test and place into intermediate Spanish may take Intermediate Spanish I and Intermediate Spanish II while in Costa Rica. Students who have placed into SPAN 3301 Advance Grammar and Composition or have already taken it, may take tow upper-level courses, Latin American Literature and Culture and Civilization of Latin America. All courses will be taught by faculty from a institution in Costa Rica. The program also offers opportunities for students to develop a sense of themselves as part of a larger, global community in which they are active participants by giving them the opportunity to participate in the life of the Costa Rican host family and local community and one volunteer activity at Elementary School teaching English to Costa Rican children. Students who are enrolled, receiving course credit and meet the UHD Travel Award criteria may receive a scholarship from the Office of Study Abroad.
